Virtual reality was supposed to be a technology of the future, but it’s still treated more as a curiosity than a technological breakthrough. There hasn’t been a revolution, but that could change in the years to come thanks to the use of technology in sectors other than entertainment.

The beginnings of virtual reality

The beginnings of virtual reality began in the 1960s in the United States, with the Sensorama, a television-like device that gave the illusion of being in a different reality, and the Ultimate Display, the first generation device virtual reality, which is the ancestor of today’s glasses.

Within the next decade another revolutionary invention was born, the Data Glove, the first glove-like controller that let you interact with virtual objects.

In the 1980s, EyePhone appeared, a prototype camera that transferred movements to virtual reality without the use of controllers, which is the ancestor of today’s Kinect. The Data Suit, a prototype suit that intercepts the movement of the legs and arms, can be considered another historical invention, which even today seems to be a rather futuristic solution.

Virtual reality, however, did not begin to attract more attention until the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, when it began to appear in arcades, and then the first arcade machines appeared.

In the early 90s, the Amiga 3000 was created, the first full-fledged set for virtual reality and based on it, gaming equipment called Virtuality 1000CS, the ingenuity of which is still impressive today. However, the first widely available consumer product of this type is the Mindflux VFX1 set – it included games, its own controller, and provided support for over 100 games.


Pop culture is interested in the topic of virtual reality, thanks to which the novel “Neuromancer”, considered a cyberpunk classic, and the cult film “Tron”, and years later “Reaper of minds” based on a story of Stephen King, are created.

Although virtual reality was effective at that time, it was on the fringes of the entertainment industry and over the years it did not gain much popularity. The equipment to operate it was simply too heavy, too expensive and underdeveloped – the level of technology was simply too low.

During the first decade of the 21st century, the VR (virtual reality) industry was stagnating. The whole industry is abandoning the idea of ​​virtual reality and for years nothing spectacular has happened in the field of virtual reality.

A real revolution was the appearance of the first prototype of the Oculus Rift VR glasses in 2012, which awakened general interest in virtual reality. These were the first commercial VR glasses available to anyone who wanted to use them – cheaper, more convenient to use, and most importantly, providing a better experience than their predecessors.

Virtual reality has become more accessible, many competing products have been created, including Google Glass and Cardboard, PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR, Microsoft HoloLens or HTC Vive, as well as accessories and content aimed at various audiences, not only fans of technological innovations – the greatest triumphs of virtual reality in the entertainment industry.

The development of virtual reality can be accelerated by devices for controlling movement not with the use of controllers, but only with the use of thought, developed by the company Neurable. Using the brain to control machines was known before, but it is only now that devices that can read and interpret brain signals and influence virtual reality have emerged. This technology can give amazing results in the future.

Virtual reality, however, has still not met with the expected success. The main barrier to market development is expensive and impractical equipment. Another obstacle is the small number of interesting productions. According to experts, the glory days are still ahead of her.

Modern VR devices were created for the games and entertainment industry, but they can also become popular in other industries – in education, medicine, industry or tourism.

The future of the VR industry – education

Education is one of the many industries that have taken an interest in virtual reality. According to research, people in virtual reality remember the content transmitted to them much more effectively. VR technology can be used to support the teaching of biology (photos and videos of nature, simulations of plant and animal structures), geography (through 360° photos and videos), or physics and chemistry (simulation of physical and chemical phenomena and processes) . Thanks to VR simulations, you can observe phenomena inaccessible to everyday life (like volcanic eruptions) or explore inaccessible places (like the depths of the oceans).

Virtual reality courses have been organized for several years all over the world – although so far to a limited extent. However, in the years to come, the number of potential users of education based on this technology could number in the millions.

According to the organizers, they save time and money, because they do not require contact with a trainer or teacher, and the training can be used by several people at the same time. In addition, according to research, they are more effective than traditional courses and training.

According to a report prepared by Goldman Sachs, by 2025 the number of potential users of education based on this technology will reach 15 million.

One of the most exciting areas of VR usage is in the healthcare market. VR glasses can facilitate the work of, for example, neurosurgeons, since with their help they can precisely locate the tumor, view a three-dimensional image of the brain, learn about its structure and better plan the operation. Virtual reality also works well in psychotherapy, allowing fears to be faced under strictly controlled conditions, which gives the patient a sense of security.

Many other fields can also benefit from the introduction of virtual reality solutions in medicine. The growing interest of doctors and patients themselves will certainly result in the emergence of new fields of application.

The industry has also noticed the potential of this technology, proving that virtual reality can be used successfully in the design of machines, significantly reducing their production time and associated costs.

VR technology allows you to create simulation models, through which you can see exactly what the finished project will look like before production and commissioning. VR design also allows you to make changes to the machine model immediately, without having to physically rebuild it.
