Huawei WiFi Mesh 7 is a true powerhouse of mesh systems

Huawei WiFi Mesh 7 is one of the most advanced mesh systems on the market. Tri-band Wi-Fi 6 Plus network, very good range, Harmony OS, what more could you ask for? Good job, sure, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

What is Wi-Fi Mesh? It’s the answer to internet range and speed problems

A Wi-Fi network, like any wireless network, has its limits. Usually, the faster the network, the smaller its range. A router, especially if we use operator equipment, very often cannot cover even an average-sized apartment. Not to mention single-family homes.

In this case, the approach that seems logical is that if one router can’t cope, maybe we use two? Or three? In the case of traditional routers, this will not work. Unless they are additionally equipped with the mesh function, each of them will create its own separate Wi-Fi network for the same Internet source. This means that if we find ourselves within range of the router, our laptop or smartphone will not automatically switch to it and will always be connected to the farthest with a lower range. On the other hand, if we switch manually, we will temporarily interrupt the connection to the Internet.

This does not happen with mesh routers. Routers not only connect to the Internet, but also to each other. When we travel with devices, we are automatically switched to a router with better range that works on the same network as the others. Thanks to this, we are always within range and we do not lose the Internet connection. In addition, the entire network works faster because its speed does not drop due to the distance from the router.

Huawei WiFi Mesh 7 shows that it is high-end equipment

Against the background of most mesh routers, the Huawei WiFi Mesh 7 stands out with a high case and very good workmanship. The devices are 220.5mm high and 76mm wide. The design is efficient, thanks to which we can easily integrate them into classic and modern interiors. To a large extent, this is due to a well-marked footer.

On the back we find four gigabit LAN ports and a power outlet. The NFC module has been placed in advance, which we will talk about in a moment when discussing the configuration of the set.

Huawei WiFi Mesh 7 is simple to set up and easy to use

The configuration of Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh routers is a bit different from what I am used to with mesh routers. We don’t need any additional apps initially. We connect any router in the set to the power supply and the Ethernet cable to the modem/router/internet source. Then we connect to the newly created Wi-Fi network. If we do it on a computer, it will be necessary to open the configuration page by entering the appropriate address in the browser. On the smartphone, the page will automatically open and all the configuration will begin.

It practically drives itself. All we have to do is create a password for the Wi-Fi network and accept it. The smartphone will tell us if the password is strong enough.

Connecting another router in the set is even easier. Simply connect it to the power supply, wait a minute and it will connect to the already existing Wi-Fi network, extending its range.

A very good addition, which is worth using, is the creation of an additional Wi-Fi network in the Wi-Fi 5 standard. Often some smart home devices, especially simple ones, such as light bulbs or consoles from previous generations, need an older network variant to operate. Here we can create it right away, just in case. I really liked this feature, because it is often for this reason that I have a problem connecting the lighting to the network.

What about managing router functions? We will use the AI Life application for this. Here too the thing is very simple, since it is enough to connect to a Wi-Fi network and the router is at our disposal. We can manage the configuration of the router and additional functions. Parental controls are certainly an important element. Here we can manage which websites a specific device can connect to and how much time it can spend on the web. It is also worth remembering about the presence of an additional firewall, which is worth using.

An interesting function is also to check the Wi-Fi signal. We create a map of our house or apartment, then, moving between rooms, the smartphone measures the network signal. If necessary, the application will tell us that we must move the router to another place to obtain better coverage.

Another useful accessory is NFC pairing. If we want to connect a new smartphone to a Wi-Fi network, we do not need to search for it and enter the password. It is enough to put the smartphone on the NFC module located at the top of the router and the device will establish the connection itself.

How has the Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh improved my internet performance?

Every day I use UPC Internet with 600 Mb/s download speed and 60 Mb/s upload speed. I’m using the router provided by the operator and at full bandwidth…basically I don’t use it. Unless I’m close to the router. Overall, download speeds typically range from 370 to 580 Mbps.

The Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh set should significantly improve this situation. The two routers included in this set are capable of covering up to 550 m2 of Wi-Fi network coverage, ensuring download speeds of up to 6579 Mb/s. As long as we have Internet at this speed. It would then be possible to obtain it by combining two frequencies of the 5 GHz band and by completing it with the 2.4 GHz band. There is also MIMO technology (2×2 in 2.4 and 5 GHz, as well as 4×4 in 5 GHz).

Less than 60 m2 at its disposal, as you can easily guess, was not a challenge for the Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh routers, although the results still exceeded my expectations. Over many attempts, download speeds ranged from 594 to 631 Mb/s and upload speeds from 56 to 62 Mb/s. It didn’t matter which corner of the apartment I was in. There is literally no place where I don’t have good wifi and high speed internet coverage.

Here comes the question, do I really need two Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh routers? Actually…not really. After disconnecting one of them, the download speed varied from 611 Mb/s near the router to 538 Mb/s at the farthest place from it. In the case of sending, it was the range of 54 to 61 Mb/s.

So I went a little further. I moved one router closer to the front door and connected the other in the stairwell. I live on the 10th floor of an old prefab building. The Wi-Fi range, allowing speeds slightly higher than 30 Mb/s, was between the 6th and 7th floors. I enjoyed the internet speed of 440-510 Mbps throughout the 9th floor hallway.

Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh is one of the most powerful mesh systems on the market. There is also an alternative in the form of WiFi Mesh 3

Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh is definitely one of the best mesh systems on the market. The performance of this set is very impressive. It is able to take full advantage of the available connection and provide Wi-Fi coverage over a very large area. In the case of a two-story house with an area of more than 200 m2, we will provide wireless coverage not only indoors and in the garden. And if we don’t need the extra ports provided by the second Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh router, one device should be enough to cover an average-sized apartment with a Wi-Fi network. Huawei WiFi 7 Mesh is sold in a set with one or two routers, which allows us to adapt the purchase flexibly to our needs. And if those change in the future, there’s nothing stopping you from adding another router to the mix.

Such a set will meet the requirements of the most advanced users. If you need the most efficient network for working or enjoying the benefits of modern entertainment, this is the perfect choice and certainly one of the best around.

And what if we have slightly lower requirements or in my case a smaller apartment? Then we don’t necessarily have to decide to buy the most powerful WiFi Mesh 7 set, but opt for a slightly more modest WiFi Mesh 3. Here we also have almost the same functions, with a smaller number of signal amplifiers reducing the range slightly. Up to 400 m2 for two routers and up to 600 m2 for three. It is therefore a very good, cheaper alternative, for example for apartments in a building. Two WiFi Mesh 3 routers can be a better choice than one WiFi Mesh 7. Network load spread across two routers can also positively affect internet speed. Especially if we are going to connect more devices to it.

Overall, Huawei has a suite of mesh routers for everyone. For more demanding customers, we recommend WiFi Mesh 7, and even the most demanding. For more modest needs, it is worth turning to the WiFi Mesh 3 kit.

The hardware was created in cooperation with Huawei.
