Test: Renault Master 4×4 for six people with configurable interior

MARCIN ŁOBODZIŃSKI • 26 minutes ago

A squad car with comfortable seats and 4×4 driving is quite an interesting, but also ingenious setup. I tested the Renault Master intended mainly for construction and assembly companies that need flexibility in the interior of the vehicle and high mobility.

Renault Master 4×4 & hairsp; – & hairsp; review, test

I discovered the efficiency of the Obereigner 4×4 drive less than two years ago when I tested a van equipped with dual wheels. This time I had a similar body, but on single wheels with completely different ratios. 19% faster, which in practice changes this vehicle beyond recognition.

Faster and more efficient

In the previously tested Master 4×4, the bearable speed is 100 km / h, and the real maximum speed is 130 km / h. With quicker, roadier gears, the Master shown here cruises effortlessly to 140 km/h at 3,000 rpm. Up to 160 km/h maximum.

Mud and sand are not dangerous for him. The master with 4x4 drive will reach places where a regular delivery truck cannot

At slower speeds the cabin isn’t even excessively noisy, and at higher speeds the main problem is the vibrating front door frames and air noise, not the engine. However, these are not the only noises in this car.

As is the case in rear-wheel-drive cars, you can hear the bridge, although you don’t mind. Plastic partition makes louder sounds of such strength as to protect the crew in the cabin against the moving load. Mounted on a steel frame on a deeper hump, it can make a sound like something is toppling from behind.

Interesting buildings

What can you expect from a brigade vehicle? I expected maximum use of passenger space and cargo space. That’s why I was surprised to see the rear bench seat with three independent and adjustable seats. Needless to say, much more convenient than you think.

I did not expect such a bench. The rear seats are more comfortable than the right front seats

Overall you can see a vehicle prepared for both off-road and long journeys. The front driver’s seat is suspended. The front passengers are the least comfortable. Those in the back have plenty of space and the possibility of adjusting the angle of the backrest. Since there are three armchairs, there is plenty of space between them. The armrests are missing perfectly, because nice finishing materials or LED cabin lighting on the coach level are already available.

Interestingly designed cargo area - details can be found in the photo gallery

However, it is interesting when you need to reconfigure the car. The Carpol company made sure that its bodywork was as universal as possible. It’s true that I couldn’t show it, because it requires a bit of work with tools and preferably two, but the seats can be removed, and the bulkhead behind them can be moved forward, creating an almost van classic of the brigade box.

The visible partition can be adjusted and the seats can even be removed

Even in such a configuration as in the photos, the cargo space is important. It is 268cm long on the ground, so not only tools, but also larger equipment will fit. There are also spreader bars and pull-out handles, making it easy to carry items of different shapes. All dimensions can be found in the table at the end of the text.

Drive without sacrifices

Like I mentioned, in the car it is not excessively noisy if you drive at a reasonable speed (and technically you can even about 160 km / h), a the driver has a comfortable seat. Unfortunately, it has a downside & hairsp; – & hairsp; fixing the lower part of the belt, which is easy to damage the thigh. The test specimen also included such rarities as the rear viewing system with a large monitor instead of a mirror and a rear view camera (separately).

The rear view camera is a separate device from the rear camera

The cabin around the driver may not be the best in its class, but it is certainly one of the best. Compared to the first test specimens, it was possible to cut the dashboard and refine the fuel quantity indications. However, it was not possible to stiffen the exterior mirrors, which vibrate so that little is visible there, at the speed of around 120 km / h upwards. More to be tall.

Mention should be made here of P. great stability of the car despite the raised suspension. Even in fast bends or motorway exits, no excessive slope is to be feared. The car is very confident at high speeds.

The driver's seat is very comfortable, but on the way up it is easy to damage your thigh with the fastening of the belt

I can’t complain either 2.3 liter power unit with 130 hp. It not only has enough power to provide a big car with adequate dynamics even at fast speeds, but can also use extremely low revs. He can only lack strength in too high gear on the ground.

The economy can also be praised, although this is not only due to the engine, but also to the aforementioned gear ratios. Fundamentally during daily driving, fuel consumption can be maintained in the range of 10-11 l / 100 kmand on the highway the car needs 16 l/100 km at a constant speed of 140 km/h. Contrary to appearances, this is an excellent result considering the dimensions and destination of the vehicle.

In town, on the other hand, a reducer is useful. You don’t need to engage the front axle drive to use the lower gear ratios (1.42), as is the case with virtually all touring off-road vehicles.

The gearbox is not only for off-road driving. It is also useful in the city and in tight places during maneuvers

Thanks to this, when driving in the city, we have a tighter gearbox and the possibility of very precise maneuvers. You just have to remember to change to highway (longer) speeds, stop. In addition, everything works very quickly, so you can do it almost anytime. Just stand for 2-3 seconds.

off-road driving

Renault Master 4 × 4 is quite a graceful off-road car, provided the driver knows his limits. And they result not only from the long wheelbase, but also from the low ground clearance which, despite the declared 20 cm or so, is actually 18.5 cm under the engine protection plate, 19 cm under the fuel tank. fuel and 17 cm under the rear axle. , 5 cm.

Rear-wheel drive alone is surprisingly efficient, in combination with the gear and off-road mode. On mud or sand, the electronics ensure that the rear axle is almost locked, and very often both wheels turn at the same or similar speed. The works are as good as, for example, in the Toyota Hilux.

After engaging front-axle traction, the Master is like a tank, as long as it doesn’t snag the chassis. It’ll rip through roads and wilderness with such characteristics that regular SUVs wouldn’t always do. The only thing that doesn’t help is a rather imprecise shifting mechanism, when needing to make a quick reduction or upshift.

Marcin Łobodziński

My opinion:

In this configuration with longer gears, it’s a completely different car than the one I tested two years ago. It drives much better off-road and isn’t a typical workhorse, although it’s not afraid of it either. Coupled with this, a comfortable, highly configurable six-seat interior results in a vehicle with many faces. And many possibilities.
